Driving to the Stars!

Please RSVP as we have a limit of 15 vehicles: Google Form

Come Join your BARC community to “Drive to the Stars.” We will be traveling up Mount Hamilton to Lick Observatory - one of San Jose’s premiere landmarks.

Since 1888, Lick has provided UC astronomers with access to world-leading optical-infrared observing equipment. Lick Observatory is owned and operated by the University of California. It is a major site in the University of California Observatories (UCO), which is responsible for its operations.

We will start off in East San Jose at the base of Mount Hamilton. Highway 130 travels about 20 miles up the front face of Mount Hamilton in a wonderful, technical drive. The road has been recently paved, so it should be a great drive.

Bring or pack a lunch as we’ll be eating lunch at the top of Mount Hamilton. At 12:30 we’ll tour the observatory having an inside look inside of one of California’s major windows to the heavens. This is a great event for the whole family!

  • Where: Lucky Supermarket (Lucky, 3457 McKee Rd, San Jose, CA 95127). Meet here so we can drive up together. Purchase a lunch here if you need to.

  • When: Saturday, 10:00 a.m. We will depart at 10:30 and will be back in San Jose at 2:30pm.

  • Route: https://maps.app.goo.gl/nRJgUSeJ7Cdoi7fy6

  • Nearest fast EV charger: Electrify America, 2300 Alum Rock Ave, San Jose, CA

We recommend at least 50% state of charge when leaving Lucky’s for newer owners less comfortable with the range in their trucks. A Better Route Planner estimates ~20% drop when climbing the mountain, and very little drop when returning back to San Jose.
